Delhi Policemen Arrested for Extorting Gold worth ₹50 lakh
from Dubai Passengers
Two Delhi police
officers were arrested on Sunday, 25 Dec. 2022 on suspicion of extorting money
from two passengers at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport,
police said.
Defendants Robin
Singh and Gaurav Kumar were posted as security guards at Terminal 3 of IGI
Airport. Both police officers were suspended from duty after being involved in
suspicious incidents.
Police said the
accused officers threatened and stole money from two passengers from Dubai. The
gold ornaments found on the defendants were valued around ₹50.6 lakh.
According to the FIR,
Salaudeen Kathat left India
in 2020 to work for a construction company in Qatar. However, his employer
refused to pay him and he was forced to return home, after which he went to
Muscat in search of work, but was forced to work again due to working
conditions. decided to leave.
In Muscat he met a
man who gave him about 600 grams worth of gold and asked him to deliver it in
exchange for the money in Delhi.
When Salaudeen Kathat arrived at IGI
airport on December 20, two police officers stopped him near the front yard.
“They stopped my taxi
and sat me in their gypsy car. I was taken to the police station and asked
about the money. I was scared and gave them money.” ”They
broke my SIM card and put my phone in reset mode. They gave me cash and booked
a taxi. They Asked me “to not tell anyone about this incident." and
threatened me as if he were to kill me," Salaudeen
Kathat claimed in his complaint.
On the same day,
another passenger, Shaikh Kadar Bashi, who was also
travelling from Dubai, was also a victim of the same two police officers. they
extorted 600 grams of gold from him
"They stopped
and looked for me. They took all my money," claimed businessman Shaikh
Kadar Bashi. Police dropped two complaints and filed
FIRs for extortion and mischief.
They were arrested
Sunday following an investigation after the accused were identified by the
complainant. A senior police officer said officers had been stationed at the
IGI airport for some time. According to their information, they are targeting
passengers who smuggled money and goods at the airport. They both are arrested
and suspended.
