Use
of Recycled Steel in the Country
Currently the total volume of
recycled steel in the country is approximately 30 Million
Tonnes (MT). Recycled steel is predominately used in construction, automobile and
infrastructure sectors.
The list of companies that produce
recycled steel in India is not maintained centrally. However, most of the steel
producers are utilizing steel scrap as inputs to produce steel.
Steel Scrap Recycling Policy,
2019 envisages establishment of scrap recycling centres for recycling of ferrous
scrap in scientific and environmentally sound manner. These centres have to adhere
to all environmental statutes or any other relevant guidelines issued by the Government
[Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC)],
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) or any other Statutory Body from time-to-time
to address environmental hazards.
Government of India has notified
the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) [HOWM] Rules,
2016 to ensure safe storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous and other wastes
in an environmentally sound manner without causing adverse effect to environment
and human health.
