CRO Expanded to All Standalone Hard Disk Drives from 5 November 2026

1.    The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued Notification S.O. 2204(E) dated 05.05.2026, amending the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

2.    Under the amendment, the entry in Column (2) against Serial No. 50 of the Schedule has been revised to read “Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)”.

3.    The amendment broadens the scope of the product category from its earlier description to cover standalone HDDs generally.

4.    USB Type External Hard Disk Drives will continue to be regulated under the existing notified provisions without any change.

5.    For all other standalone HDDs, the provisions of the Compulsory Registration Order, 2021 will become applicable from 05 November 2026.

6.    Manufacturers and importers of standalone HDDs (other than USB-type external HDDs already covered) will be required to comply with the prescribed registration requirements from the effective date.

7.    Field formations have been instructed to sensitize officers under their jurisdiction regarding the amended provisions.

8.    Any implementation-related difficulties may be brought to the notice of the Board for clarification or resolution.

Subject: Implementation of MeitY Notification S.O. 2204(E) dated 05.05.2026 regarding “Standalone Hard Disk Drives” under Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

Reference is invited to Notification S.O. 2204(E) dated 05.05.2026 issued by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) amending the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021”.

2. Vide the said notification, the entry at Column (2) against Sr. No. 50 of the Schedule to the said Order has been substituted as “Standalone Hard Disk Drives”.

3. Further, it has been provided that the requirements for USB Type External Hard Disk Drives shall continue to be governed as per the existing notified provisions and that, for all other standalone HDDs, the provisions of the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021” shall become applicable with effect from 05th November.

4. In view of above, it is directed that necessary action may be taken to sensitize officers under your jurisdiction regarding the above issue.

5. The difficulties, if any, may be brought to the notice of the Board.

Subject: Amendment to the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021”

S.O. 2204(E).—In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) and (2) of section 16 read with sub section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary or expedient so to do in the public interest, hereby makes the following amendments to the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021”:

The entry at Column 2 of S. No. 50 in the Schedule of the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 shall be substituted as “Standalone Hard Disk Drives”

2. The requirements for USB Type External Hard Disk Drives shall continue to be governed as per the existing notified provisions. For all other standalone HDDs, the provisions of the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021” shall apply with effect from 5th  November.
