Canadian Softwood Lumber Import into US under 24.75% Duty as Local Industry Clamours for Protection

The Commerce Department has upped the combined antidumping and countervailing duty rate on Canadian softwood lumber to 24.75 percent in its seventh annual review.

The review covers lumber imported in calendar year 2024.

A group representing US producers praised the decision. “The Commerce Department has reaffirmed that Canada continues to trade unfairly in softwood lumber. After absolutely egregious behavior in 2023, Canadian sawmills spent 2024 continuing to dump their subsidized lumber into the US at elevated rates," said Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the US Lumber Coalition.

“Homegrown product supplies the overwhelming majority of lumber consumed in the United States,” coalition chair Steve Swanson said. “Canada's market share has been pushed down to levels not seen since the 1970s. Let's keep driving forward. Continued strong trade policies are what will allow the US industry to continue to regain market share to fully supply our own market, and use US raw materials to produce US lumber to build US homes while supporting over 1.3 million US forestry jobs.”
