The Department of
Homeland Security is banning the use of China’s DeepSeek artificial intelligence
from all federal government agencies.
DHS said in a Federal Register notice that it has
decided to prohibit the use of information technology products and services
developed by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Company, Limited,
including affiliated entities as defined in applicable regulations, from
federal civilian agency procurements.
The order also
requires the removal of all DeepSeek and DeepSeek-affiliate products, and third-party
products and services developed using DeepSeek implementations, from civilian
agency information technology.
House Select
Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar (R-Mich) praised the move to ban
DeepSeek technology from all federal civilian agencies' IT systems.
“DeepSeek is a
dangerous AI model that has no place in the federal government, and the Trump
Administration is right to put this commonsense AI guardrail in place,” he
said. “Last year, the Select Committee investigated how DeepSeek is a tool for
the CCP to spy, steal, and subvert export controls on the world-leading chips
that keep America ahead of the CCP.”
