Centre Mandates BIS Certification for Aluminium Cookware and Beverage Cans from October 2026

In a near about turn, the Central government has notified a fresh Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order, 2026, making Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mandatory only for wrought aluminium utensils and aluminium beverage cans with effect from 1 Oct. 2026. Issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the order replaces the 2025 quality control regime for these products which covered both stainless steel and aluminium utensils and sinks dropped permanently but large manufacturers who adopted the BIS Scheme from 1 Oct. 2025 will not be exempted!

Under the new order, manufacturers must comply with IS 1660:2024 (wrought aluminium utensils) and IS 14407:2023 (aluminium cans for beverages) and affix the BIS Standard Mark under Scheme-I of the BIS conformity assessment regulations. The compliance deadline is October 1, 2026 for large firms, January 1, 2027 for small enterprises, and April 1, 2027 for micro enterprises, providing a staggered transition for MSMEs.

Products manufactured for export, pre-existing certified or declared stock (allowed to be sold for six months), filled containers imported into India, and limited imports for research and development are exempted. BIS will act as the certifying and enforcement authority, strengthening quality assurance and consumer safety in food-contact aluminium products.
