WIFI Spectrum De-Licensed Covering 6 GHz Band for Low-Power
Wi-Fi and Wireless Access Systems
The Central Government
has notified the Use
of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System including Radio Local
Area Network in Lower 6 GHz Band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules,
2026, allowing licence-free
operation of wireless access systems in the 5925–6425 MHz band. The rules
permit low-power indoor and very-low-power outdoor devices, including Wi-Fi
(RLAN), to operate on a non-interference, non-protection, shared basis without
spectrum assignment, subject to strict technical limits on power, bandwidth,
and out-of-band emissions.
Operational
restrictions apply: use is prohibited on oil platforms; indoor use is barred on
vehicles, boats, and aircraft (except above 10,000 ft); and the band cannot be
used for drone or unmanned aerial system control. Devices must employ
contention-based protocols, have integrated antennas, obtain equipment type
approval, and comply with national or international safety standards. The
framework aims to expand high-capacity wireless connectivity while safeguarding
licensed services through defined interference-mitigation provisions.
Control of walkie
talkie spectrum continues under Consumer Protection Act
