National Single Window System (NSWS): 5 Years of Digital Business Approvals

DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry — 22 September 2026

1.    Five years of NSWS: The National Single Window System (NSWS) was launched on 22 September 2021 by DPIIT to provide a common digital platform for business approvals from Central Ministries, State Governments and regulatory authorities.

2.    Purpose: NSWS enables investors to identify, apply for and track approvals through a single interface, reducing duplication, compliance burden and approval timelines.

3.    Key modules:

o    Know Your Approvals (KYA)

o    Common Registration Form

o    Applicant Dashboard

o    Document Repository

o    E-Communication Module.

4.    KYA coverage: The KYA module identifies approvals applicable to a proposed business activity. NSWS hosts applications covering 32 Central Ministries/Departments and 34 States/UTs. KYA guidance is advisory and does not constitute legal advice.

5.    Single registration: The Common Registration Form captures information once and enables its reuse across applications. A dedicated State Registration Form provides access to State Single Window Systems.

6.    Digital document facility: The centralized Document Repository permits one-time uploading and reuse of documents for multiple approvals.

7.    Real-time tracking: Applicants can monitor applications, respond to departmental queries and renew applicable approvals through the Applicant Dashboard and E-Communication Module.

8.    Approval workflow: Investors register using an email ID and mobile number, identify approvals through KYA/search, and submit applications. NSWS electronically forwards applications to the concerned Ministry, Department or State Government for processing.

9.    Fees: NSWS registration is free, but applicants must pay statutory fees prescribed by the concerned authority through the portal.

10.  Single Business ID: NSWS uses PAN as the Single Business ID, with authentication through Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and DigiLocker for sole proprietors.

11.  FDI integration: The Foreign Investment Facilitation Portal (FIF Portal) has been integrated with NSWS for FDI applications requiring Government approval.

12.  IEM and Industrial Licence:

·         Industrial Entrepreneur Memorandum (IEM) process migrated to NSWS in October 2025.

·         Industrial Licence (IL) process migrated in March 2026.

·         Both processes are now completely digital.

13.  Digital processing benefits: Integration with government databases enables auto-population of information, eliminates manual approval requirements and allows industries to generate acknowledgements instantly.

14.  Production Investment Business Registration: Launched in November 2025, this module helps Indian companies generate Sponsorship Letters for inviting foreign professionals under the e-Production Investment Business Visa (e-B-4 Visa).

15.  PESO integration: The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has integrated all 74 licensing modules with NSWS, making it the first department to achieve complete transaction-level integration.

16.  Annual applications: As of 21 September 2026, NSWS receives an annual average of over 3.06 lakh applications and facilitates more than 2.26 lakh approvals annually.

17.  Business entities onboarded: More than 5.69 lakh business entities — including sole proprietorships, companies, LLPs and foreign entities — have been onboarded.

18.  Current approval coverage: NSWS provides access to 327+ Central approvals and 3,452 State approvals across 34 States and UTs.

19.  Major approvals covered: These include company incorporation, industrial licences, startup recognition, FDI approvals and registration under the Contract Labour Act.

20.  States with highest integrated approvals:

·         Assam — 335

·         Karnataka — 327

·         Tamil Nadu — 223

·         Manipur — 190.

21.  Flagship programmes: NSWS also serves as a common gateway for approvals relating to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Ethanol Policy, Vehicle Scrapping Policy, and Indian Footwear and Leather Development Programme.

Key Takeaway

NSWS has evolved into a pan-India digital single-window platform for business approvals, integrating Central and State regulatory systems, with 5.69 lakh+ business entities onboarded, 327+ Central and 3,452 State approvals available, and over 3.06 lakh applications received annually as of September 2026.
