Nirmala in Singapore to Woo Hedge Funds to Stop the Declining Stock Market

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is visiting Singapore
from 9–11 October 2026 for high-level meetings with Singapore’s leadership,
business executives and global investors.

She is scheduled to meet Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam,
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister
Vivian Balakrishnan.

Discussions will focus on trade and investment, digital
financial connectivity, capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing,
skill development and aviation.

Singapore is India’s largest source of FDI, with cumulative
inflows of approximately US$194.68 billion from April 2000 to March 2026.

The Finance Minister will participate in a roundtable with
hedge fund and portfolio fund managers and hold Government-to-Business meetings
with leading investors.

Meetings are planned with senior executives of major institutions,
including GIC, Temasek, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered, MUFG and TPG.

NIIF and GIFT City will be promoted as potential channels
for greater Singaporean investment in India.

The Ministry of Finance will facilitate connections between
Singaporean investors and Indian companies, financial institutions and State Governments
to advance investment opportunities.
The visit aims to strengthen the India–Singapore Comprehensive
Strategic Partnership and translate closer bilateral relations into increased investment,
business partnerships and economic cooperation.

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate
Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman is on an official visit to Singapore from 9th
to 11th October 2026. During the official visit, FM Smt. Sitharaman will
hold a series of high-level engagements with the leadership of Singapore, senior
members of the business and investment community, and global institutional investors.
During the visit, Smt. Sitharaman will
call on H.E. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of Singapore; H.E. Mr. Lawrence
Wong, Prime Minister of Singapore; Mr. Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore;
and Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Foreign Minister of Singapore.
The discussions will cover key areas of
the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and take forward the outcomes
of the ISMR, including cooperation in trade and investment, digital financial connectivity,
capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, skilling and
aviation.
Singapore is India’s largest source of
FDI, with cumulative FDI
inflows of around USD 194.68 billion during April 2000–March 2026. Singaporean
institutional investors, including GIC and Temasek, have significant investments
across the Indian economy.
As part of her engagements with the investment
community in Singapore, the Union Finance Minister will engage with leading Singaporean
and international investors, financial institutions and business leaders through
a Roundtable with Hedge Fund and Portfolio Fund Managers and a series of
Government-to-Business (G2B) meetings. The interaction will provide an opportunity
for an exchange of views with leading global investors on India’s growth trajectory,
investment opportunities and the evolving global economic and financial landscape.
FM Smt. Sitharaman will also hold a series
of one-to-one meetings with senior business leaders and heads of leading global
financial institutions, investment firms and healthcare companies. These will include
meetings with the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the Government of Singapore
Investment Corporation (GIC); Temasek Holdings (P) Limited (Temasek); DBS Bank Ltd. (DBS); Standard Chartered Bank;
British International Investment (BII); IHH
Healthcare Berhad (IHH); Asia-Pacific, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. (MUFG);
B Capital; HPS Investment Partners (HPS); Chairperson, Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken
AB (SEB); Director, Board of Directors, Mitsui & Co., Ltd.; and Executive Chairman
and Founding Partner, TPG.
Platforms such as the National Investment
and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and GIFT City can provide avenues for
greater participation by Singaporean capital, including through investment vehicles
and funds.
The Ministry of Finance, in coordination
with relevant Ministries and industry bodies, will facilitate connections between
interested Singaporean investors and Indian companies, financial institutions and
State Governments, and provide necessary handholding to take identified investment
opportunities forward.
The visit underscores India’s commitment
to deepening its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore, with
a particular focus on leveraging the strong political relationship to promote
greater investment, business partnerships and concrete economic outcomes.
