[ABS News Service/22.11.2025]
Samsung's exports of smartphones, television sets,
refrigerators and washing machines from India rose 25% to ₹45,930 crore
in 2024-25, indicating that the country is fast becoming a major global
production hub for the South Korean electronics giant.
Exports accounted for nearly 42% of Samsung India
Electronics' revenue last fiscal year compared with 37% in FY24, as per the
company's latest regulatory filings with the Registrar of Companies.
The India unit also started exports to the US from this
calendar year, as per the filings. It did not specify the products that were
exported to the US. Software export from India rose 21% to ₹2,274 crore.
The strong growth in exports for Samsung India comes in
stark contrast to its performance in the domestic market, where revenue grew
just 5%.
As per the regulatory filings, Samsung India's revenue from
operations rose 11.7% to ₹1,11,183 crore in FY25, while net profit surged
38% to ₹11,286 crore. This entity is responsible for manufacturing, local
sales and exports in India for Samsung.
The filings show Samsung India shipped products to nearly
70 countries, including some where it has large local production, such as
Vietnam and South Korea.
The Galaxy smartphones are exported to China, Europe, Saudi
Arabia, South Korea, the UK, the US and Vietnam, while home appliances and
televisions are mostly shipped to emerging markets in Africa, Asia and even its
home market of South Korea.
Samsung India did not respond to an email seeking comment.
An industry executive said Samsung India's exports will
continue to rise this year, as companies expand sourcing bases and Korean
manufacturers build their supply chain and vendor base in India. "However,
this year, the GST reduction will give a bump to the domestic sales too,"
he said.
Rival Apple's India entity, Apple India, is only involved
in smartphone, tablet and computer sales. Apple's smartphone manufacturing in
India through third-party contractors is driven directly by its US
headquarters.
As per government data, Apple exported iPhones worth $17.4
billion from India in FY25. Samsung is the second-largest smartphone exporter.
India's total smartphone exports surpassed ₹2 lakh crore in FY25,
increasing 54% from the year before.
While Apple and Samsung were almost neck to neck in sales
value in the Indian market in 2023-24, the iPhone maker widened its lead in
FY25 due to a faster pace of growth, regulatory filings of the two companies
show.
While Samsung posted India sales of ₹62,084 crore in
FY24 compared with Apple's ₹63,297 crore, in FY25, Apple's sales in this
market rose to ₹74,680 crore against Samsung's ₹65,253. To be sure,
Apple's FY25 revenue in India grew at the slowest pace in six years, but still
it was 18% up at ₹79,378 crore, including income from business services
provided to other Apple entities.
"Samsung India shows no slowdown, with profit rising
and cash and bank balances climbing from ₹17,300 crore in FY24 to nearly
₹27,900 crore in FY25," said Mohit Yadav, founder at market
intelligence firm AltInfo. "This scale of
increase leaves no doubt that the company is generating cash far faster than it
is spending."
Samsung India's smartphone business contributed 74% to its
sales, followed by home appliances with an over 10% contribution, the filings
show.
The company in the filing said that due to the rapidly
changing industry scenario and the need for further strengthening the business
operations, it did not pay any dividend in FY25. It paid ₹3,240 crore as
royalty to the parent in South Korea. The retained earnings of Samsung India in
FY25 were ₹42,199 crore, compared with ₹30,915 crore in FY24.
Market researcher IDC India's data for the smartphone
market for the July-September quarter shows Samsung India was at third place
with a volume market share of 12.6%, improving marginally from a year earlier.
Vivo was the leader with an 18.3% share, followed by Oppo with 13.9%. Apple, in
fourth place, had a 10.4% market share.
