Current requirement of scrap in total
Crude Steel production of 120 million tonnes (MT) in the country is
approximately 30 MT [26 MT domestically generated scrap + 4 MT imports of
scrap].
Government has notified
the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy in November 2019. The policy provides a
framework to facilitate and promote establishment of metal scrapping centres in
India for scientific processing and recycling of ferrous scrap generated from
various sources. The decision to set up scrapping centres by Public Sector
Units /Private Sector is taken based on commercial considerations.
Recycled steel is
used as an input in steel making process as scrap. Scrap is used as a charge
mix in the production of Crude Steel via Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Induction
Furnace (IF) and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) routes. The current requirement of
scrap in total Crude Steel production of 120 million tonnes (MT) in the country
is approximately 30 MT [26 MT domestically generated scrap + 4 MT imports of
scrap].
