Wind Turbines from
Mexico are not Security Risks, Trump over Rules Commerce on Sec 232 Tariff Recco
[ABS News Service/23.10.2026]
President Trump
opted yesterday not to impose tariffs imported wind turbines, instead instructing
his top trade officials to enter into negotiations with trading partners to
limit imports.
Mr. Trump’s
announcement came following recommendations from Commerce Secretary Howard
Lutnick finding that imports of wind turbines pose a national security threat
under Section 232.
In an executive
order, Mr. Trump said that his Commerce Secretary had made recommendations for
dealing with the imports. The executive order does not specifically mention
tariffs, but Mr. Trump said that if negotiations are unsuccessful, he will
consider other remedies.
In the meantime,
Mr. Trump directed Mr. Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to
conduct negotiations with other countries and to report back within 180 days.
The Commerce
Secretary and USTR “shall jointly pursue or continue pursuing negotiations of agreements
to address the national security threat found in this proclamation,” according
to the order.
Commerce also is
directed to continue monitoring imports of wind turbines and their components
and subcomponents.
